Whygo2 Milan
Letsgo2 employees have travelled extensively to the destinations we feature. Here are the five main reasons they would consider a visit to Milan.
Shopping
One of the main reasons so many people visit Milan each year is for shopping, from designer labels such as Gucci and Prada to high street brands such as Kookai and Benetton, there is something to suit all budgets. For designer shopping and jewellery, Via Montenapoleone, Via Sant Andrea and Via della Spiga are home to famous names such as Luis Vuitton, Cartier and Fendi. For more affordable purchases, visit Corso Vittorio Emanuele and Via Torino where you will find names like Diesel, Miss Sixty and H&M. There are also many designer outlets in the city centre such as Dolce & Gabbana and Max Mara where you can find past collections at a fraction of the price. Alternatively visit some of Milans markets, in particular Fiera di Senigallia, every Saturday Viale d Annunzio along the wharf becomes a picturesque sight with stalls selling everything from craftwork to second hand clothes.
Architecture
There are many beautiful and historic churches and buildings of interest in Milan. The Duomo is the most outstanding example of Gothic Lambard architecture dating back to 1300 and housing 3500 statues. Spread over an area of almost 12,000 square meters it is one of Milans most visited sites. Visit the Basilica of Sant Ambrogio where you can see valuable artefacts and works of art that tell the story of about 1600 years of Milans history. The Castello Sforzesco is a majestic building with wonderful interior courtyards built in Gothic Renaissance style. The incredible halls have been designed by Leonardo and with frescos painted by master painters such as Bramante this is well worth a visit.
Art
Milan is rich in art and this can be seen in its many museums and galleries throughout the city. Visit Cenacolo Vinciano; home to Leonardo da Vincis fresco of the Last Supper one of the most famous masterpieces in history. This work of art has undergone a massive restoration that lasted twenty years and was only recently finished bringing it back to its former glory. The Pinacoteca di Brera is an art gallery that was set up in 1809 by Napoleon Bonaparte and houses a great number of works of art that were confiscated from churches and convents throughout Europe, including masterpieces by artists such as Raffaello, Bramante and Caravaggio.
Entertainment
The city of Milan is considered to be the economic capital of Italy. Its a metropolis that has been the ideal setting for international events for decades attracting professionals, artists and intellectuals from all over the world. Visit a fashion show and check out the newest seasons collections before they hit the shops. La Scala Theatre is one of the oldest theatres in the world and one of the most important cultural institutions in Milan, it is still considered to be the temple of Opera music today. Football fans might wish to visit one of the most famous football stadiums in the world; the San Siro is home to both AC Milan and Inter Milan football club.
Nightlife
There are many good restaurants in Milan offering a wide range of both local and international cuisine. The Brera area has several stylish restaurants and bars and in the evenings the little streets are thronged with tourists, locals and chancers trying to sell you tickets or read your fortune. Milan is Italys clubbing capital and there is plenty to keep you entertained in the evening, especially around the Navigli and Brera districts, with many of the bars and clubs open till the early hours of the morning.
